In the context of globalization Nepal has pursued liberalized economic policy with thrust on attainment of broad based sustainable development through productivity and quality enhancement. Towards this end, Government of Nepal has formed National Productivity Council (NPC), which seeks to address the socio-economic development programs with productivity thrust.

The National Productivity Council is chaired by Hon'ble Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies. It is represented by various governmental and non-governmental organizations involved in the socio-economic sectors. As the Secretariat of the NPC, the NPEDC executes the policy directives given by the NPC, and endeavors to contribute to socio-economic development process through productivity promotion and enhancement services. The General Manager of NPEDC is the Member-Secretary of the Council.

 The Major functions of the National Productivity Council are:

To give directives and advice on productivity policy planning, program development and execution;

To create awareness and motivate people towards achieving higher productivity;

To co-ordinate productivity improvement programs across sectors and institutions in the country; and,

To strengthen cooperation and networking with national, regional and international institutions for productivity improvement.
